Information Assistant Job Description

Information assistants are responsible for answering a wide variety of inquiries that come into the main information center for the university. This position requires patience, professionalism, and a willingness to learn. Information assistants need a balance of representing the university while sharing a personal student perspective and the ability to tolerate and adapt to a wide range of situations. The position responds to the university's admissions-related questions, including inquiries from prospective and current applicants and parents.

Position Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must currently be enrolled as a matriculated Rutgers student.

  • Previous experience in a customer service setting is recommended, but not required.

  • Available to work 10–12 hours per week during the academic semester (including final exam periods). Training programs and special projects will be assigned as necessary. Student colleagues will be responsible for covering the hours they have agreed to work.

  • Able to work for at least one academic year.

  • Required to work one semester break annually: winter break, spring break, or one of the three summer sessions. Special circumstances can be reviewed by the RU-info Coordinator; an employee may be excused from this requirement at the discretion of the RU-info Coordinator.

  • Participate in and successfully complete the staff appraisal process, and recognize the importance and value of feedback about job performance.

  • Agree to successfully complete the initial training program and participate in any on-going in-service training or refresher courses, as needed.

  • Finish an initial three-month probationary period, including any involvement requirements, prior to becoming a full-fledged information asssitant.

  • Able to respond to questions or concerns in an empathetic and nonjudgmental manner toward a wide range of human concerns. Able to express oneself clearly: possess voice quality, enunciation, cheerfulness, and customer service skills.

General Information and How to Reach Us

Starting Wage: $11/hour to start, with opportunities for promotion.
Training: 10–35 hours of paid training to commence once hired.
Hours of Operation: 8:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday
10 a.m.–4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday
Hours may fluctuate during special events or emergencies.
Schedule: 10–12 hours per week is required (including final exam periods), scheduled around your academic class schedule.
